Bib Tag beats the heat at the 2012 Boston Marathon

Bib Tag Beats The Heat At the 2012 Boston Marathon

The MYLAPS BibTag system once again proved itself as the number one technology for mass road race timing at the Boston Marathon. With not a single missed detection in the Elite field at 11 timing locations and excellent read rates for the complete field, our partners Mika Timing and Sports Management Associates and all other timing companies involved had a perfect day. And all that was needed was the MYLAPS BibTag placed on the back of the runners’ bib. Even for races with very high density and accuracy requirements like the Boston Marathon, MYLAPS only uses a single tag per bib number. The MYLAPS BibTag system is reliable even in the most extreme weather conditions and at any race length.

Incredibly clean data

Around 22,500 runners started the race in Hopkinton. Despite the record heat and humidity this year, the system performed as well as expected. Even with incorrect placement of bibs, due to many athletes running without shirts, the BibTag system captured their times. John Burgholzer, Technology Director with the Boston Athletic Association, said: “the data is incredibly clean, I couldn’t be happier with the statistics. MYLAPS’ choice to develop a system specifically for detection on the bib definitely pays off.”
